Hello, fellow art lovers and nature enthusiasts!

June has unfurled its sunny canvas here, and with it, our garden has truly sprung to life. There's a certain magic in the air – the scent of blooming flowers, the gentle hum of bees, and my absolute favorite, the cheerful symphony of birdsong that greets me each morning. This year, a particularly delightful source of this joy has been our little bird bath, which has transformed into a bustling hub of activity, and I just had to share the charm with all of you!

It’s become my favorite spot for a quiet cup of chai, watching the world go by – or rather, watching the winged wonders flock to their very own spa!

Our setup is quite simple: a dark, elegant basin that really makes the water sparkle, nestled on a sturdy metal stand. But the real star, and the reason for all the exuberant splashing you see, is the solar fountain we added. It’s a fantastic little gadget! It sits in the middle of the basin and, powered purely by the sun, sends up a gentle, inviting spray of water. No wires, no fuss – just pure, delightful, dancing water. We’ve placed it amongst a bed of smooth river stones, with our vibrant fuchsias and other greenery providing a lovely, natural backdrop.

And oh, the visitors it attracts! From the moment the sun hits the solar panel, it’s like an open invitation. We've had the most charming little finches – sometimes two or three at a time! – who seem to absolutely adore the fountain. They don't just come for a quick sip; they perch right under the spray, fluffing their feathers, dipping their heads, and having a proper bath. It’s like watching a tiny, joyous water ballet unfold every single day. They splash with such abandon, sending shimmering droplets flying everywhere, and honestly, it’s one of the most heartwarming sights. The way they hop around, waiting their turn or sometimes bravely sharing the space, is just too cute.

Watching them has made me realize a few things about creating a bird-friendly corner:

  • Moving water is key! Still water is good, but the gentle movement and sound of the fountain seem to be an absolute magnet for birds. It signals fresh, clean water and perhaps even mimics the natural springs or streams they’d seek out.

  • Location matters. We’ve found that having it in a spot that gets good sunlight (for the solar fountain, of course!) but also has some nearby shrubs gives the birds a sense of security. They can quickly flit to cover if they feel the need.

  • Keep it clean and inviting. A quick refresh of the water every couple of days and a gentle scrub now and then ensures it remains a healthy spot for our feathered friends.

  • More than just a bath. We have a hummingbird feeder nearby too, and together, they create a little ecosystem that supports our local birdlife. It’s wonderful to see the different species interacting with these spaces.

There’s something incredibly grounding and inspiring about observing these simple, natural moments. As an artist, I find so much of my inspiration in the colors, textures, and patterns of the natural world – from the iridescent sheen on a feather to the way water droplets catch the light. Watching these little creatures enjoy a simple pleasure reminds me of the beauty in the everyday, the joy in small things. It’s a living piece of art, constantly changing and always delightful. While I spend so much time shaping clay and bringing my own creations to life, there's a unique satisfaction in curating a space that invites life in.
